The Cookie Is Fading Out, the Click ID Is Not

For a decade, affiliate link tracking leaned on 3rd-party cookies and sheer luck. These days, with Apple’s ITP, Firefox’s ETP and the Chrome Privacy Sandbox reshaping the browser layer, that approach effectively broke down.

The replacement is server-to-server (S2S) infrastructure: a individual click ID injected into the advertiser’s checkout, then returned through a callback URL the instant a conversion fires. Zero cookies, no dependence on pixels, no silent revenue leakage.

What Exactly Modern Affiliate Software Really Handles

Good affiliate tracking software is not anymore a redirect handler with a dashboard bolted on. Today it is an attribution core — processing deep links, Sub ID parameters, smart links, geo- and device-based routing, and first-party domains under your own CNAME record.

Around that core sits the business logic: CPA, CPL, CPS plus RevShare schemes, tiered payout rules, referral fees, cross-device stitching and configurable attribution windows with last-click or multi-touch models.

Data Quality Is the True Deliverable

Affiliates churn for one reason more than any other: they no longer believe the reported data. Discrepancy between a partner’s own affiliate tracking figures and the platform’s reporting is the surest way to lose a top-tier media buyer.

That is why granular reporting is critical — impression and click-level logs, conversion paths, EPC, CR, approval rate, LTV and cohort breakdowns, all reconcilable through an API and automated exports into a BI warehouse.

Traffic Fraud, Compliance and the Unglamorous Work That Protects Budgets

Click spamming, cookie dropping, automated traffic, incentivised installs and lead duplication still eat double-digit percentages from unprotected programmes. Fraud-prevention modules — IP- and device-level fingerprinting, frequency checks, proxy, VPN and TOR detection, anomaly scoring — should live in the tracking layer, not in a monthly spreadsheet audit.

The compliance side works identically. GDPR and consent-mode handling, PII minimisation, data retention policies and audit-ready logs are now procurement criteria, not footnotes for lawyers.

Selecting a Platform You Won’t Regret

Start with three deceptively simple questions: does it support S2S callbacks natively, can it handle millions of clicks daily without delay, and how costly is migration of historical data?

Every other feature — the publisher dashboard, the banner and creative storage, self-service invoicing, fraud notifications — is valuable, but replaceable. Trustworthy attribution is not. In performance marketing, the platform that measures reality accurately is the one that eventually decides who gets paid, and who grows.
